Online Board of Directors Application
The Connecticut State Independent Living Council (CT SILC), a federally mandated nonprofit organization, seeks individuals who are interested in serving on the CT SILC Board of Directors.
• Directors are Governor appointed.
• A majority of the Directors must be people with disabilities who are not employed at the Centers for Independent Living.
• Directors are the governing body of the organization and are responsible for the overall operation of the CT SILC.
By federal law, the CT SILC is charged with:
• Developing and implementing a state plan that promotes independent living for people with disabilities in Connecticut.
• Collaborating with a statewide network of Centers for Independent Living (CILs) to promote independent living systems in Connecticut
• Monitoring, reviewing, and evaluating progress on the State Plan for Independent Living (SPIL).
Mission of CT SILC
The mission of the Connecticut State Independent Living Council (CT SILC) is to promote choice, equal access, opportunity, and the full inclusion of people with disabilities in the economic political, social, cultural, and educational mainstream of American Society.
Terms of Office
All Directors are appointed by the Governor and shall take office on the date of the first board meeting scheduled after the member is appointed. Directors shall serve for three years and may not serve for more than two terms or six consecutive years until one year has elapsed since the expiration of the second term or the completion of a sixth consecutive year.
Board Commitment and Responsibilities
CT SILC Directors are expected to:
• Attend ALL regular and special Board meetings.
• Attend occasional CT SILC events and activities.
• Actively participate in at least one CT SILC Committee.
Information about CT SILC Board meetings and events:
• The CT SILC Board meets monthly.
• With the exception of the Annual Meeting, all Board meetings are virtual via zoom at a time agreed upon by the Board of Directors.
• The Annual Meeting and election of officers is held in the fall. This meeting is in person from 10-3 PM with lunch provided.
• The Board may have occasional in-person retreats.
• The CT SILC will cover costs for disability related
